Animal Health Alert Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EE)

KALAMAZOO, MI--On Friday July 30th, the Michigan Department of Community Health was notified of a suspect human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a resident of Kalamazoo County. The patient fell ill in mid-July while traveling and is hospitalized with signs of encephalitis in Ohio, but was likely exposed to infected mosquitoes in Michigan. Confirmatory testing is pending. As of today, there have been a total of 5 confirmed cases of EEE in horses from Calhoun (2), Barry (2), and Cass (1) counties, as well as numerous reports of suspect equine cases in this area.
